FAQs
HOW FAR IS THE ROW? 3000 nautical miles, or 4800 kilometers.
HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE DONE IT? Whilst a number of people have rowed the Atlantic from East to West, less than 15 of those were solo women.
HOW LONG DO YOU ROW FOR EACH DAY? The most common approach is to row in a 2 hour on, 2 hour off pattern thoughout the day and night, with total rowing time totalling approximately 12 hours a day. However as a solo rower I will have to react to weather conditions and may row for longer periods with short bouts of rest between.
HOW BIG IS THE BOAT? An ocean rowing boat is between 7 to 8 metres long, and 2 metres wide.
WHAT DO YOU EAT? Using a jet boil to boil water, rowers prepare and eat dehydrated food. In addition, snack bags are packed in advance which will be consumed throughout the day. On average a rower consumes 5000 calories a day.
WHAT DO YOU DRINK? The boat has a desalination unit on board which, using energy from solar panels, processes 30 litres of clean water in an hour.
WILL ANYONE BE MONITORING YOU? I’ll be in regular contact via sat phone with a land-based team who will assist with course routing throughout the crossing. Other than this the row is entirely unsupported once I am at sea.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO YOU NEED TO HAVE? You are required to have the following mandatory qualifications. In addition you must pass an Ocean Rowing Course.
1) RYA First Aid at Sea
2) RYA Sea Survival
3) SRC Short Range Radio Licence
4) RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship
